The YMCA has been an excellent customer and supporter of FunTech throughout our first year in business. The fundraiser is organized and sponsored by FunTech in order to show our appreciation for the YMCA's support.
Our first official customer was the Tyler branch of the YMCA. Someone had donated 10 computers to the YMCA of Tyler. YMCA management intended to use them as a public access computer lab, providing low income and disadvantaged people (who otherwise would not have easy access to a computer or the internet) free access to this facility. However, given the age of the machines, most were inoperable in their current state, and in a short amount of time, only 1 of the original 10 computers was operational. In seeking professional assistance, the YMCA of Tyler was given the typical treatment by several other computer service providers, who often said that the only reasonable solution was buying brand new computers. Knowing the budget would not allow for the purchase of 10 brand new computers, the YMCA of Tyler began searching for an alternative solution. It wasn’t long before they heard about a new computer service company claiming to provide quality service at an affordable price. Within days, all 10 of the computers were at FunTech headquarters being diagnosed. After ordering the necessary hardware to fix the mechanics of all 10 computers, we turned to the software aspect of the equation. Understanding the need for a budget-conscious solution, we suggested that the Tyler YMCA allow installation of the open-source Linux-based operating system, Ubuntu. With their approval, we installed this operating system on all 10 computers and set them up in the Tyler YMCA computer lab. Those 10 computers, without exception, have now operated successfully for over 14 months. Eventually, we also installed a laser printer to complete the current Tyler YMCA public access computer lab.
While the computers have functioned smoothly, as with all technology, eventually updates must be made due to the rapid rate of innovation. The initial computers were already quite dated, and will eventually need to be replaced. FunTech Computers takes pride in our ongoing support of non-profit organizations like the Tyler YMCA. We are currently partnering in a fund raiser to generate increased awareness of the Tyler YMCA and overhaul their computer lab, to supply it with computers that will last for years to come. As our business continues growing, it is important for us to remember why we founded the company, and we believe that continued support of organizations like the Tyler YMCA plays a crucial role in this.
